Rum was first made in the West Indies in the 16th Century by Spanish settlers, who worked in the sugar factories there.

Various types of rums are made around the world.  The best known is Jamaican rum, which is a dark rum.  Cuba produces light rums like Bacardi.

One of the oldest cocktails that contains rum is Planters Punch, which dates back to the 17th Century.
